The state of Amazonas experienced an unprecedented moment in its political history with the indirect election of Roberto Cidade as governor. The choice was made by the Legislative Assembly after the resignation of then-governor Wilson Lima and vice-governor Tadeu de Souza, paving the way for an interim mandate until the end of the current term.
The vote was conducted by the 24 state deputies, in an open and nominal format, as provided for in the state Constitution for cases of vacancy in the last two years of a term. This was the first time the state had chosen a governor without direct participation from the electorate.
Ascending political career
Originally from Manaus, Roberto Cidade is 39 years old and has built his political career progressively. He began his journey in 2016, running for a seat in the City Council, becoming an alternate. In 2018, he was elected state representative with over 33 votes and, since then, has expanded his presence in the local political scene.
In the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas, he held strategic positions, such as the vice-presidency of the Board of Directors and the presidency of the Transportation Committee. In 2020, he was elected president of the House, becoming the youngest person to hold the post.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, he participated in conducting votes considered relevant, such as the creation of permanent state aid and the allocation of resources for the health sector in municipalities.
Interim mandate and legal rules
Indirect elections occur when there are simultaneous vacancies in the positions of governor and vice-governor in the last two years of a term. In these cases, the law dictates that the choice be made by the Legislative Assembly, and the elected candidate assumes office only to complete the remaining period, without starting a new term.
This scenario was triggered by the resignations of Wilson Lima and Tadeu de Souza, formalized in April 2026. In official documents, both justified the decision as necessary to comply with the legal deadline for incompatibility, required for those intending to run for another office in the general elections.
Political context and next steps
Roberto Cidade's selection comes amid political maneuvering leading up to the 2026 elections. Although there was no prior announcement of the resignations, the decision follows rules established in electoral law.
The inauguration date for the new governor is yet to be determined. Until then, the political landscape of Amazonas remains marked by institutional adjustments and preparations for the next electoral cycle.
