The Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly (ALERJ) informed Governor Wilson Witzel's defense team on Tuesday, through the Official Gazette, that it has resumed the impeachment process, reopening the work of the 25-member investigating committee, in accordance with the decision of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
The document formalizes the end of the suspension of the count and the resumption of the remaining time for the presentation of the defense. In reality, the commission has already held seven sessions, with three remaining for the governor to present his arguments. With one session per day, starting today, the deadline expires next Thursday (September 3rd).
After Wilson Witzel's lawyers filed their defense, the rapporteur, Deputy Rodrigo Bacellar, will have up to five sessions to present a document with his conclusions, which must be voted on by the committee. It is likely that Bacellar will not wait the entire period.
Next, the document will go to the plenary session, which by an absolute majority (36) decides the governor's fate. If the report recommends proceeding with the complaint, and it is approved, the governor will be removed for 180 days, during which time a bipartite commission (five deputies and five judges from the Court of Justice) will make the final judgment.
