The Legislative Assembly approved today (August 4) the transfer of R$20 million from its Special Fund to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) for the revitalization and renovation of the National Museum's facilities. The Fund was approved by Law 8.731/2020, which addresses the budget allocation from a financial surplus recorded in previous fiscal years at the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly (Alerj). The measure became part of the Multi-Year Plan in fiscal year 2020. The project was authored by President André Ceciliano, who discussed the details of the proposal with the university's rector in numerous meetings.
"This is the culmination of a series of collaborations between the Alerj (Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly) Science and Technology Commission and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), which began in 2019. This effort aims to rebuild the National Museum, a Latin American architectural, historical, archaeological, and cultural heritage site. The goal is to restore it and make it available to the scientific community and society at large. It's another element in the ongoing dialogue between the Rio de Janeiro State Parliament and Rio's scientific community," said state representative Waldeck Carneiro, one of the bill's co-authors.
