Weeks before his death, former minister Gustavo Bebiano expressed concern about the possibility of President Jair Bolsonaro attempting a self-coup to perpetuate himself in power, defying democratic institutions. In a private conversation with his friend Paulo Marinho, Bebiano even suggested that Bolsonaro, cornered by growing criticism of his administration's apparent failure, could attempt a coup. The revelation was made by Paulo Marinho in an exclusive interview with Jogo do Poder, which will air next Sunday at 22 p.m. on CNT Television Network.
Paulo Marinho, the PSDB's pre-candidate for Rio's mayoralty, made two moves during the interview. First, he took a dig at Eduardo Paes, stating that he must understand that he has already fulfilled his role as mayor, performing his duties brilliantly. He then called for unity among centrist forces, including the former mayor. "He will play a decisive role in building an alliance between these camps, which will be crucial to victory," he added.
After discussing the reasons that led him to run, especially Bebiano's sudden death, Marinho harshly criticized Mayor Marcelo Crivella, whose administration he described as disastrous. In his opinion, Crivella's political engineering, building bridges with the Bolsonaro family, will not produce solid electoral results. He believes nothing will change Rio residents' negative opinion of the current mayor's administration. "Choosing the mother of Mayor 01, 02, and 03 as his running mate makes absolutely no sense. Only Crivella would believe that. And besides: Bolsonaro already has enough problems in Brasília to be worried about the election here," he sneered.
The PSDB pre-candidate also criticized Eduardo Paes's strategy of focusing solely on consensual themes of the city's cultural life, such as samba and Carnival, without taking a clear stance on national politics. "Eduardo thinks he'll get everyone's vote, but he's completely wrong. Bolsonaro's troops won't vote for him under any circumstances. He needs to take a stand," he added.
Marinho also said that political renewal in Rio requires a freshening of all sectors. He cited, for example, Firjan, whose president, Eduardo Eugênio Gouveia Vieira, has controlled the organization for an incredible 25 years. "He has to understand that this needs to change. It's not working anymore."
