Federal Representative Benedita da Silva (Workers' Party-RJ) introduced a bill this week aimed at guaranteeing the rights of domestic workers during the coronavirus pandemic. The proposal contains a series of measures aimed at protecting domestic workers from the impacts of COVID-19. The initiative aims to protect a sector that has already suffered from the spread of the epidemic: the first death from the virus in Rio de Janeiro was a 63-year-old domestic worker who had been in direct contact with her employer, who arrived from Italy and tested positive for the disease.
Among the proposals, the Project guarantees: the removal and absence of domestic workers from work, without loss of employment or salary; a minimum income for those who perform informal domestic work activities and the waiver of the waiting period for the granting of social security benefits; and professional stability — during the emergency period to combat Covid-19.
In the event of non-compliance, the legislation also provides for the payment of compensation to the domestic worker, in an amount corresponding to the sum of the monthly remuneration to which they would be entitled, from the date of dismissal until the end of the emergency period.
“Regarding day laborers, of whom there are almost 2 million across the country, the project ensures a minimum income for those not enrolled in the social security system,” adds Benedita da Silva.
