Brazil registered One femicide every 5 hours and 25 minutes between January and March 2026. according to data released by g1 based on information from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. In total, there were 399 women were victims of this type of crime during the period., the highest number ever recorded for a first quarter since the start of the historical series in 2015.
The survey, compiled from the National Public Security Information System (Sinesp), shows that the number represents a a 7,5% increase compared to the same period in 2025This growth reinforces an upward trend over the last decade and highlights the worsening of gender-based violence in the country.
Growth over the years
In ten years, femicide records in the first quarter have more than tripled.In 2015, 125 victims were counted, a number that jumped to 399 in 2026. The current total even surpasses previous peaks, such as those recorded in 2022 (372 cases) and 2024 (384 cases).
Data indicates that January was the most violent month of the quarter, with 142 deaths. In February, there was a drop to 123 cases, but the numbers rose again in March, with 134 victims.
Regional differences and states on alert.
Analysis by federative units reveals that only Acre and Roraima did not register cases of femicide during the period. In proportional terms, Amapá showed the greatest increase, rising from 2 cases in the first quarter of 2025 to 7 in 2026 — an increase of 250%.
The most populous states, such as São Paulo and Minas Gerais, continue to lead in absolute numbers, which also contributes to the total national volume.
Persistent violence
The continued rise in femicides reinforces the challenge for authorities in curbing violence against women in the country. Experts point to the need for more effective public policies, expanded protection mechanisms, and stricter law enforcement to address the problem.
