Former Goiás governor Ronaldo Caiado stated this Wednesday that "there is a feeling" for building an electoral alliance with former Minas Gerais governor Romeu Zema, aiming for the 2026 presidential elections. The statement was given in a radio interview. New Broadcasterin São Paulo, after Zema admitted the day before that he does not rule out an agreement between the two.
According to Caiado, a union between well-regarded political leaders could represent an alternative to the polarized scenario of the presidential race. The former governor of Goiás described the potential alliance as a "testament to political credibility" and a "breath of fresh air for the population that wants to see an alternative to break with the polarization."
Conversation between the pre-candidates
Caiado also revealed that he met with Zema on Tuesday in a meeting he described as "very productive." According to him, both are considering expanding the political dialogue in the coming months.
“With the latest poll, we talked and there is this feeling [of unity in the first round]. He is an open person and we are really looking into it,” said Caiado. “At this moment, the candidacies are in a position, we have to have the humility to recognize, above us. The moment we unite all forces, they may arrive strong only in the second round or they may still arrive competitive in the first round. It is very symbolic that the forces of the well-regarded governors are all together in the first round.”
On Tuesday, during a meeting with investors, Zema stated that he maintains a good relationship with Caiado, but cautioned that any electoral decision should only be made closer to the deadline for party conventions.
Electoral scenario and political frictions
In the Datafolha poll released last week, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva appears with 40% of voting intentions, followed by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro with 31%. Zema registers 3%, while Caiado totals 4%.
Behind the scenes, Zema was even considered by members of the PL party to run on a ticket with Flávio Bolsonaro. However, the rapprochement cooled after the Minas Gerais politician criticized the senator following the release of audio recordings sent to businessman Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master.
