The Chamber of Deputies is promoting a vaccination campaign against influenza and MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) at the Pedro Ernesto Palace in Cinelândia.

An event open to the public, in partnership with the Municipal Health Department, is offering vaccines until June 3rd in downtown Rio, amidst warnings about low vaccination coverage before winter.

The Rio City Council began, on the morning of this Wednesday (27), a vaccination campaign open to the public at the Pedro Ernesto Palace, in Cinelândia, in the city center. The action offers doses against influenza and the triple viral vaccine — which protects against measles, mumps and rubella — and will continue until June 3, always from 9 am to 15 pm, except on Saturday and Sunday.

Conducted in partnership with the Municipal Health Department, the campaign, according to the organization, seeks to expand vaccination coverage at a time of concern about low uptake of influenza immunization before the arrival of winter, a period when there is greater circulation of respiratory viruses.

According to data from the city hall, vaccination coverage among priority groups is still below the Ministry of Health's target. Among the elderly, the rate is 36,69%; among pregnant women, 32,36%; and among children, 21,56%.

Who can get vaccinated?

The influenza vaccine is available to everyone starting at six months of age. The MMR vaccine can be administered to people up to 59 years old.

For those up to 29 years old, the complete measles vaccination schedule requires two doses. Those who have not yet been immunized should receive the first dose and schedule the second. People between 30 and 59 years old who have never received the vaccine should receive one dose.

The president of the Rio de Janeiro City Council, councilman Carlo Caiado (PSD), stated that the initiative seeks to facilitate access to vaccination for the population in a high-traffic area in the city center.

"The Rio de Janeiro City Council is keen to open its doors to campaigns like this, facilitating public access to vaccines and encouraging prevention at this strategic time, which precedes winter," he said.

The municipal health secretary, Rodrigo Prado, highlighted that the partnership allows for expanding the reach of immunization to workers and people who circulate daily in the central region.

"The City Hall is opening its doors to host a vaccination station, which will benefit everyone who works in this downtown area and will be able to enter the Pedro Ernesto Palace during their lunch break or other breaks and get vaccinated," he stated.

The campaign also featured, on its first day, the presence of the character Zé Gotinha and council members from the Youth Chamber, who participated in the mobilization to encourage vaccination.
