Henry Borel case: see why the jury trial is already the longest in the last 18 years in Rio.

Henry Borel's trial has surpassed the duration of Flordelis' jury trial and is already the longest in Rio de Janeiro in 18 years; witnesses, interrogations, and final arguments are yet to take place.

The trial of defendants Monique Medeiros and Jairo Souza Santos Junior, known as Jairinho, for the death of the boy Henry Borel, reached a historic milestone this Saturday (31). Entering its seventh day of sessions, the jury became the longest in the State of Rio de Janeiro in the last 18 years, even surpassing the trial of former federal deputy Flordelis, held in 2022.

According to information released by g1, the expectation among those involved in the trial is that the proceedings will continue for several more days, possibly extending for at least another week. The jury is being presided over by Judge Elizabeth Machado Louro at the 2nd Jury Court of the Capital, in downtown Rio.

Why is the trial taking so long?

The exceptional length of the trial is the result of a combination of factors. In addition to the large number of witnesses called by the parties, the process was also marked by several procedural incidents, requests made by the defense, and judicial decisions made during the plenary session.

Among the events that contributed to the prolongation of the proceedings was Jairinho's defense's attempt to postpone the opening session of the jury trial again, alleging health problems of one of the lawyers. There were also changes in the order of the interrogations after a court decision determined that Jairinho would only be heard after Monique Medeiros.

Record surpasses Flordelis case.

Until then, the longest trial in the state was that of Flordelis dos Santos de Souza, held in November 2022. On that occasion, the former parliamentarian was convicted of triple-aggravated homicide, double-aggravated attempted homicide, use of false documents, and armed criminal association.

Just as is happening now in the Henry Borel case, the trial of Flordelis brought together dozens of witnesses, family members, and experts, requiring an extensive reconstruction of the facts before the jury.

What still needs to happen?

Despite the seven days that have already passed, the trial is still far from over. In the coming days, defense witnesses indicated by Jairinho's lawyers are expected to testify, including family members and experts.

Only after this stage will the interrogations of the two defendants take place. Following that, the Public Prosecutor's Office, assisting prosecutors, and the defense will present their final arguments.

The jury's decision will only be made after all these phases are completed, when they will answer the questions that will determine the acquittal or conviction of Monique Medeiros and Jairinho.

With this, the Henry Borel case has already gone down in the history of the Rio de Janeiro judiciary as the longest jury trial in the last almost two decades, and there is still no exact date for its conclusion.
