Mumps cases nearly double in Rio de Janeiro, raising alarm.

Low vaccination coverage worries authorities; most cases occur in children.

The state of Rio de Janeiro registered a significant increase in mumps cases at the beginning of 2026. According to the State Health Secretariat (SES), 395 cases were recorded in the first quarter of this year, compared to 210 in the same period of 2025 — an increase of almost 90%.

According to the survey, most infections occur among children. More than half of the cases involve patients under 9 years old, with 37% in the 5 to 9 age group and 26% between 1 and 4 years old. To date, there have been no reported deaths from the disease.

The State Health Department (SES) points out that the main reason for the increase is the drop in vaccination coverage. In the state, 85,62% of the target population received the first dose of the vaccine, while only 70% completed the schedule with the second dose. This rate is below the 95% target set by the Ministry of Health.

Triple viral

The MMR vaccine, which protects against mumps, measles, and rubella, is offered free of charge at health centers. The schedule requires two doses: the first at 12 months of age and the second at 15 months.

Health authorities emphasize that immunization is the primary form of prevention. Mumps can cause fever and intense pain when chewing or swallowing, and in more severe cases, can lead to complications such as viral meningitis and even hearing loss.
