The Corpus Christi holiday will provide an even longer break for state employees. The state government has declared Friday, June 5th, a non-working day, extending the holiday and creating a four-day long weekend for part of the public service.
The decision follows the move already adopted by the Rio City Hall This reinforces expectations of increased travel, tourism, and movement in cities across Rio de Janeiro state during the extended period. As a result, many state employees are not expected to return to work until the following Monday.
The decree, however, does not apply to all sectors. Services considered essential will continue to operate normally, such as health units and other strategic bodies of the public administration. In the case of the state health network, the State Health Secretariat will still publish specific regulations defining the hours and schedules of operation during this period.
The news is even more significant because this will be the first time Corpus Christi will be officially celebrated as a state holiday in Rio de Janeiro. The change occurred after the law was passed in October 2025, making the state a pioneer in including the date in the official holiday calendar.
Until then, Corpus Christi was treated only as a national optional holiday, leaving the decision about the operation of public offices to states and municipalities. With the new legislation, Rio de Janeiro officially guarantees the day off for state public sector workers.
The combination of the official holiday on Thursday and the optional holiday on Friday is expected to directly impact traffic on the roads, especially towards the Lakes Region, Serra and Costa Verde, traditional tourist destinations sought after during long weekends.
