Ride-hailing services may be subject to monitoring for cases of violence against women.

The text approved in the first reading requires companies to create a transparency report on recorded incidents.

Cases of violence against women during ridesharing apps may be monitored more systematically in Rio de Janeiro. The Legislative Assembly (Alerj) approved in first discussion, this Thursday (28), a proposal that obliges individual transport companies using apps to prepare periodic reports with information on incidents registered on the platforms.

The measure is included in Bill 26/23, authored by Representative Martha Rocha. Since the text has already received parliamentary amendments, it may still undergo changes before the final vote.

Transparency Reports

According to the proposal, companies will be required to produce a Women's Safety Transparency Report, compiling data related to crimes and situations of violence against women that occurred during rides booked through the apps.

The initiative seeks to expand mechanisms for monitoring and preventing these cases, as well as allowing greater access to information about incidents involving female passengers and drivers.

This text complements Law 9.996/23, which established the Program for the Prevention of Violence Against Women in App-Based Transportation in the state.

Awareness campaigns

In addition to publishing the reports, the proposal establishes that the platforms must display virtual banners within the applications warning that violence against women is a crime.

The measure aims to raise awareness among users and drivers about the importance of preventing and combating gender-based violence while using individual transportation services.

With its approval in the first reading, the text will continue its progress through the Legislative Assembly before returning to the plenary for a final vote.
