Cunha was authorized by the court to leave Bangu 8 prison for hospital treatment. In addition to hemorrhoids, the former congressman suffers from anemia and has lost a significant amount of blood.
Despite being taken twice to the Emergency Care Unit that serves prisoners at the Bangu Penitentiary Complex in need of blood transfusions, Cunha refused treatment at the public facility.
