Deputy Renata Souza (PSOL) warned members of the impeachment committee about the need to open another important front in the investigations into fraud and misappropriation of funds in the state government. In Tuesday's session (30), Renata said she found it strange that the committee's efforts are concentrated only on fraud in the field hospitals, when there are strong indications of irregularities in the contracts signed with the office of the first lady Helena Witzel.

  • "A month before the first contract, she opened the office. We've seen this movie before with Cabral's wife. We saw what happened. The impeachment committee needs to pay attention to this. At the beginning of every revelation of the possibility of a crime of responsibility, the participation of the first lady's office was clear. This needs to be the focus of the investigations within the scope of the impeachment," he stated.

Late in the afternoon, information reached Alerj (Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly) that several other contracts had been signed between Helena Witzel's office and financial operators representing government suppliers. This included not only the R$ 540 contract already disclosed with one of the companies belonging to Alessandro Duarte, a partner of Mário Peixoto, a sort of successor to King Arthur in the almost absolute control of service contracts within the government.

According to a parliamentarian who had access to the initial information, Helena Witzel's situation is more serious than that of Adriana Ancelmo, wife of Sérgio Cabral. Both allegedly took advantage of their power relationships within the government to enter into illicit and ethically reprehensible contracts. However, Adriana actually provided services, working on the cases and managing a reputable law firm. Helena, on the other hand, did not actively act on behalf of the companies; she provided informal, extrajudicial consulting, something akin to a verbal advisor.

In the coming days, all information regarding the First Lady's contracts will be compiled and cross-referenced with the role of the contracting companies in the execution of services during the pandemic.
