A planned and executed operation, lasting only a few minutes, is being investigated by the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro. Security cameras recorded the moment when two men broke into a computer lab at Celso Lisboa University, in Engenho Novo, in the northern part of the city, and stole 25 laptops from the institution.
The crime occurred last week and drew attention due to the speed of its execution. According to the images, the suspects needed only seven minutes to break into the room, collect the equipment, and leave the scene.
The case was registered at the 25th Police Station (Engenho Novo), which is seeking to identify those involved and clarify the dynamics of the action.
Three are suspected of involvement.
According to the university, there is evidence suggesting that at least three people participated in the crime. Images show that the group arrived on campus around 20:15 PM.
While the two men were walking around one of the institution's buildings, a woman reportedly remained in another building, near the computer lab. It is suspected that she was monitoring the activity there and waiting for the classroom to end.
Only after the students left would the group have begun executing the plan. Watch Video:
The theft lasted only seven minutes.
The recordings show that, around 21:40 PM, a camera installed in the hallway was pushed to change its viewing angle. Then, the two men appear attempting to break down the laboratory door.
After managing to get into the room, they collect the computers and put them in backpacks and bags. At times, upon noticing movement in the hallway, they even throw themselves to the ground to avoid being seen.
The entire operation was completed in about seven minutes.
University monitors investigation
In a statement, the rector of Celso Lisboa University, Vanessa Lacerda, highlighted the institution's historical relationship with the local community and stated that there is no evidence to identify the perpetrators or their origins.
“Our campus has been located for over 50 years in the area of Rua 24 de Maio and Marechal Rondon, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, maintaining a historical and very close relationship with the local community. Throughout all these years, we have always counted on the support, respect, and care of students, teachers, staff, and residents of the surrounding area,” he stated.
The director added that investigations are being conducted by the competent authorities and that the university is awaiting clarification of the facts.
The images captured by the surveillance system should be crucial for identifying those involved. The Civil Police are analyzing the recordings and working to locate the suspects and recover the stolen equipment.
To date, there is no information regarding arrests related to the case.
