Eduardo Paes reacts to the arrest of a congressman and demands direct elections in Rio de Janeiro.

Pre-candidate for governor of Rio de Janeiro criticizes the political landscape after Thiago Rangel's arrest and defends direct election for state leadership.

A arrest of state deputy Thiago Rangel (Avante), this Tuesday (5)This provoked immediate reactions in the political scene of Rio de Janeiro. One of those who spoke out was the former mayor of the capital and pre-candidate for state governor, Eduardo Paes (PSD), who used social media to harshly criticize the political environment of the Legislative Assembly (Alerj).

In a statement, Paes linked the episode to the current institutional crisis in the state and the debate about the possibility of indirectly electing the next governor.

"It is this Alerj [Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly] that Claudio Castro's 'scheme' wants to indirectly elect the Governor of the State," he wrote.

Subsequently, the former mayor broadened his criticism, mentioning sensitive areas of public administration.

"They want to continue stealing from Education! And from Social Security! And from Ceperj! And from Health! And wherever else they can!", he stated.

The demonstration takes place on the same day that the Federal Police carried out another phase of an operation investigating suspected irregularities involving public contracts. Rangel's arrest reinforces the climate of pressure on the Rio de Janeiro Legislative Assembly, which has already been the target of investigations and political disputes.

At the end of the post, Eduardo Paes made a direct appeal for changes in the process of choosing the state's leadership.

"Have some shame! DIRECT ELECTIONS IN RIO DE JANEIRO!", he declared.
