The new US tariff hike on Brazilian products took a new turn on Tuesday (2). Senator Flávio Bolsonaro said he personally asked US President Donald Trump not to apply tariffs against Brazilian companies during a meeting held last week at the White House in Washington.
According to the congressman, the request was made amid discussions about the trade investigation conducted by the American government against Brazil. The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) concluded the process and proposed the adoption of tariffs of 25% on Brazilian goods, although some exceptions are foreseen in a specific list of products.
In an interview given to Rádio Itatiaia, in Belo Horizonte, Flávio reported that he presented Trump with arguments in defense of the Brazilian economy and highlighted sectors considered strategic for the country.
“I expressly asked, ‘Don’t tax Brazilian companies.’ In 2027, you will have a government that will sit down with you and negotiate on equal terms. Our agriculture feeds the world, and it’s not fair to tax our companies. We have to value our technology, our PIX (Brazilian national investment program), our ethanol, which is clean energy. We have to incentivize this capital of ours, which is ethanol. We have everything we need to sit down on equal terms,” the senator declared.
Relationship between Brazil and the United States
During the interview, Flávio Bolsonaro also argued that a possible return of the right wing to the Presidential Palace, starting in 2027, could open the door to a closer relationship between Brasília and Washington.
According to the senator, a government politically aligned with the United States would be able to expand bilateral cooperation in economic and strategic areas. Among the topics he mentioned are agribusiness, the Pix payment system, and ethanol production, a sector in which Brazil is among the main global players.
