Israeli forces have announced the capture of Beaufort Castle, a Crusader-era fortress perched atop a strategic mountain in southern Lebanon. The operation represents the deepest advance by Israeli troops into Lebanese territory in over 25 years and marks a new stage in the war against Hezbollah, which began in March of this year.
The takeover occurred after days of intense clashes and bombings in neighboring areas. According to the Israeli army, troops confronted Hezbollah fighters in a mountainous region considered crucial for military control of the south of the country.
Beaufort Castle is located near the city of Nabatieh, one of the main urban centers in southern Lebanon. The capture of the fortress is seen as one of the most significant territorial gains achieved by Israel since the beginning of the current military campaign.
Fortaleza has historical and strategic importance.
Built during the Crusades, Beaufort Castle occupies an elevated position with wide visibility over the region. Over the decades, the fortress has transformed into a military point of great strategic value due to its dominant location.
Israel had already controlled the castle during the invasion of Lebanon in 1982, maintaining a presence in the area until its withdrawal from the country in 2000.
On Saturday, Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee released a photograph on social media showing Israeli soldiers patrolling the stronghold after capturing the position.
Operation extends beyond the Litani River
In a statement, the Israeli army reported that the offensive began a few days ago in the Beaufort mountain range and also in the Suluki Valley, further south. According to the military, the objective of the operation is to eliminate structures used by the militant group Hezbollah and neutralize what they classify as threats to the Israeli population.
Israeli forces advanced through several villages after crossing the Litani River, which for years served as a kind of informal dividing line between areas of influence in southern Lebanon.
With the new offensive, the troops would now be about five kilometers from Nabatieh, approaching one of the most important cities in the region.
The Army also stated that it is prepared to expand military operations if deemed necessary.
Ceasefire does not prevent escalation of conflict.
The military advance is occurring despite a nominal ceasefire in effect since April 17. In practice, however, clashes and attacks have continued to be reported at various points along the border and within Lebanese territory.
The offensive also takes place while representatives from both countries participate in direct talks in Washington, in an attempt to reduce tensions and avoid a further escalation of the conflict.
The war began after rocket attacks.
The current war between Israel and Hezbollah began on March 2nd. On that occasion, the Lebanese group launched rockets against northern Israel two days after attacks carried out by US and Israeli forces against Iran, Hezbollah's main regional ally.
Since then, Israel has launched a wide-ranging military campaign, including ground operations in southern Lebanon. Over the past few months, Israeli troops have taken control of dozens of towns and villages near the border.
The conflict has already caused a serious humanitarian crisis. According to the latest figures, at least 3.350 people have died in Lebanon since the start of the war, while more than one million residents have been forced to leave their homes because of the fighting.
