The PSD (Social Democratic Party) has begun to discuss more openly the paths it intends to follow in the 2026 presidential race. Amidst the negotiations for forming alliances and defining candidacies, the party's national president, Gilberto Kassab, admitted the possibility of the party launching a ticket exclusively composed of its own members, with the governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado, as the presidential candidate. This information comes from journalist Andréia Sadi's blog on the portal [website name missing]. g1.
Among the hypotheses being analyzed is the possibility of Kassab occupying the vice-presidential slot in a potential candidacy headed by Caiado. Despite this, the leader stated that he has no personal interest in joining the ticket and emphasized that the priority at this moment is to strengthen the electoral project of the governor of Goiás.
According to Kassab, the decision regarding the format of the candidacy should only occur in the coming months, with a decision expected in July.
"That will be decided in July. I have no such ambition. My ambition is for Caiado to win the election," Kassab told the blog.
The statement reinforces that the PSD still has different alternatives on the table for the presidential race and intends to assess the political landscape before making a final decision.
Two scenarios under analysis
Currently, the national leadership of the PSD is working with two main models for next year's presidential election.
The first scenario envisions Ronaldo Caiado's candidacy within a broad center-right coalition, bringing together different parties and political leaders. In this context, the party is holding talks with potential allies and analyzing names that could make up the presidential ticket.
Among the politicians mentioned in the discussions is the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, who appears as one of the possibilities to be part of a potential electoral alliance.
The strategy seeks to broaden the candidate's support base and consolidate an alternative political field, both to the federal government and to the main opposition groups already positioned for the election.
A ticket exclusively from the PSD party is gaining momentum.
The second scenario being considered by the party is the formation of a ticket composed entirely of party members.
In this scenario, both the presidential candidate and the vice-presidential candidate would be members of the PSD, reinforcing party identity during the election campaign.
It was in this context that the possibility arose of Gilberto Kassab occupying the vice-presidential slot on a ticket led by Caiado.
Although he acknowledged that the topic is being discussed internally, the leader avoided fueling speculation about a possible independent candidacy and stated that the priority remains building a competitive project for the presidential election.
Negotiations are ongoing.
Behind the scenes, PSD leaders believe that defining a coalition in advance could limit the scope for negotiation with other parties interested in building a center-right candidacy.
For this reason, the party intends to use the coming months to deepen discussions, gauge electoral scenarios, and evaluate potential alliances before formalizing any decision.
The strategy also takes into account the political calendar, since the second half of the year tends to intensify the negotiations for the formation of presidential tickets and state agreements.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo Caiado continues to be treated as the PSD's main candidate for the presidency, a scenario that has been reinforced by party leaders since the beginning of discussions about the 2026 elections.
July should be a decisive month.
The expectation within the party is that July will mark a turning point in the negotiations.
Until then, the PSD intends to assess the viability of broader alliances and gauge the receptiveness of its own candidacy at the national level.
Based on these discussions, the party will have to decide whether to seek an alliance with other political forces or to field a ticket composed exclusively of its own members to contest the presidential election.
