Leme becomes the scene of a fight between Argentinians and Brazilians hours before Vasco vs. Barracas.

Avenida Atlântica had to be temporarily closed after a fight involving about 30 rival fans on Leme Beach.

Argentine fans were involved in a brawl with Brazilians on Leme Beach, in the South Zone of Rio, on Wednesday afternoon (27), hours before the match between Vasco and Barracas, from Argentina, for the Copa Sudamericana. The commotion mobilized teams from Segurança Presente and the Military Police and even caused the temporary closure of Avenida Atlântica.

According to information published by g1Witnesses reported that the commotion involved Argentinian fans, street vendors, and beachgoers near the Hilton Hotel, one of the busiest spots on Leme beach.

Chaos on the waterfront

According to Segurança Presente (Present Security), approximately 30 people were involved in the disturbance. In a statement, the agency reported that teams acted quickly to prevent the situation from escalating into a full-blown brawl.

"The teams acted quickly to prevent the situation from escalating into a full-blown brawl, monitoring the groups' movements and reinforcing police presence in the area," reported Segurança Presente.

The officers remained at the scene until the arrival of the bus carrying the Argentinian fans.

Atlantic closed

Following the commotion, Avenida Atlântica had to be partially closed to allow the Argentine fans' bus to maneuver, according to the Rio de Janeiro City Hall's Operations Center.

The activity caught the attention of residents, tourists, and beachgoers, at a time of high traffic in the South Zone region.

Police reinforce policing

The State Secretariat of Military Police reported that agents from the 19th BPM (Copacabana) acted in support of the Segurança Presente teams to control the situation.

According to the police, there were no arrests or seizures. However, police presence remained reinforced in the area after the disturbance.

This Wednesday, Barracas faces Vasco at São Januário for the Copa Sudamericana, a match that has attracted Argentine fans to Rio de Janeiro.
