Light identifies 3,7 cases of energy fraud in Rio de Janeiro in April.

Inspections resulted in 13 arrests and the recovery of enough energy to power more than 20 homes.

In April, Light reinforced its actions to combat irregularities in electricity consumption throughout its concession area, intensifying inspections to curb illegal connections and contribute to the quality of supply for its customers. Throughout the month, the company identified 3.744 irregularities.

In total, 15 people were taken to police stations to give statements, with 13 arrests made on the spot and 20 police reports filed.

Inspections have identified irregularities in residences and also in commercial establishments, such as restaurants, markets, and other points of high energy consumption, which maintained clandestine connections or tampered metering systems.

Southwest Zone in focus

The actions took place throughout Light's concession area, with particular emphasis on operations carried out in regions such as Bangu, Nova Iguaçu, Barra da Tijuca, and Recreio.

In total, 4,171 GWh of energy were recovered during this period, a volume sufficient to supply approximately 20.855 homes for one month.

Energy theft: a loss for everyone

In 2025 and the first two months of 2026, Light regularized nearly 2.900 illegal connections and normalized more than 136 irregular installations in homes and businesses. In total, 240 GWh of energy were recovered, enough to supply approximately 80 homes for a year.

Despite the company's ongoing efforts in partnership with public authorities, illegal connections still represent a major challenge, with estimated losses of R$ 1,3 billion per year, resources that could be allocated to improvements in the electrical grid.

To give you an idea of the impact, for every 100 regular customers, about 35 steal electricity. These connections overload the grid, compromise supply, and can cause outages.
