President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated, this Wednesday (27), that Petrobras should soon announce the results of studies on the possible existence of oil off the coast of Amapá, in the Equatorial Margin region.
The statement was made during an interview with Rede Amazônica, in Manaus. According to Lula, the technical surveys have already been carried out and the state-owned company has the capacity to operate in deep-water exploration areas.
"It won't be long before Petrobras announces whether or not it has the oil that we believe it has," the president declared.
Oil exploration in the Equatorial Margin has been the subject of debates involving environmental and economic issues. The region is considered strategic by the federal government and Petrobras due to the potential for oil reserves similar to those found in neighboring countries, such as Guyana.
In recent years, the issue has generated disagreements between sectors of the government, environmentalists, and regulatory bodies, mainly regarding the environmental impacts of the activity at the mouth of the Amazon River.
