More tributes: Preta Gil will have a cultural facility named after her in Rio.

A law passed by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall officially honors the singer, immortalizing her name in a municipal cultural facility.

The city of Rio de Janeiro has made another tribute to singer Preta Gil official by enacting a law that names a municipal cultural facility after her. The measure was formalized through Law No. 9.361, published in today's edition (4) of the Official Gazette.

The project, authored by councilman Marcio Ribeiro (PSD), the government leader in the Rio de Janeiro City Council, had been approved by the Legislative branch and seeks to recognize the artist's career, which marked Brazilian music, entertainment, and public debate in the country.

In the text sent to the president of the City Council, councilman Carlo Caiado, the mayor announced the approval of the proposal, which mandates that the Executive Branch take the necessary steps to implement the law. Therefore, it will be up to the city government to decide which cultural facility will bear the singer's name.

Daughter of Gilberto Gil, one of the biggest names in Brazilian music, Preta has built her own career, marked by authenticity, advocacy for diversity, and a strong connection to Rio de Janeiro, the city where she developed much of her artistic journey.

The singer died on July 20, 2025, at the age of 50, due to complications from bowel cancer. Her public life was also marked by her engagement in issues such as inclusion, freedom, and representation.

In defending the proposal, Marcio Ribeiro highlighted the artist's impact beyond music.

“Preta Gil was much more than an artist. She was a powerful voice in the fight for respect, freedom, and inclusion. Rio needs to keep this history alive. Preta represented the free and plural spirit of Rio. Naming a cultural facility after her is to ensure that her memory continues to inspire new generations,” he stated.

The enactment of the law reinforces the movement to recognize individuals who have contributed to Brazilian culture, incorporating their names into the city's urban landscape.
