The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hugo Motta, included on the plenary agenda for this Wednesday (27) the proposal that foresees the end of the 6×1 work schedule, even before the conclusion of the analysis by the special committee created to discuss the topic in the House, reports Metropolis.
The Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) alters the rules governing working hours in the country and establishes a gradual reduction in weekly working hours, while maintaining workers' salaries. The special committee session is ongoing, and the text needs the support of at least 20 of the 38 members of the committee to advance to the plenary session.
Special committee analyzes proposal
The expectation is that the matter will face intense debate among parliamentarians from the government's base, the opposition, and representatives of the productive sector. The proposal has gained momentum in recent months following mobilizations by workers and labor unions in defense of more flexible working hours and increased rest time.
If approved by the committee, the PEC will proceed to a vote in the Chamber's plenary session, where it will need the support of at least 308 of the 513 federal deputies in two rounds of voting. If it reaches the necessary number of votes, the proposal will be sent to the Federal Senate.
What does the proposed amendment to end the 6x1 work schedule entail?
The text establishes that the current 44-hour work week will initially be reduced to 42 hours within 60 days of the enactment of the constitutional amendment. Within a maximum period of 14 months, the work week should decrease to 40 hours.
Another point included in the proposal is the guarantee of two paid weekly rest days for workers, one of which should preferably be on Sundays. The text also stipulates that the reduction in working hours cannot result in a decrease in salary.
Debate on economic and labor impacts
Supporters of the proposal argue that the change could improve workers' quality of life, increase productivity, and reduce problems related to physical and mental strain caused by long working hours.
Business sectors are already expressing concern about potential financial impacts, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises, which could face increased operating costs due to the need for new hires to maintain business operations.
