A shipment of weapons destined for communities in Rio de Janeiro controlled by criminal factions was intercepted by the Federal Police this Sunday (31), on the Castelo Branco Highway, in Porto Feliz, in the interior of São Paulo. The operation resulted in the arrest of a Paraguayan citizen who was transporting 33 pistols, as well as dozens of magazines for firearms.
According to the Federal Police, investigations indicated that the weapons had originated in Paraguay and were destined for Rio de Janeiro, passing through the southern part of the state before supplying criminal groups in communities in the capital.
During the operation, agents seized 33 pistols, 15 rifle magazines, and 28 pistol magazines. The action involved the participation of the Federal Police's Drug Enforcement Division in Rio de Janeiro, the Federal Police's Sensitive Investigations Group in São Paulo, and had the support of the São Paulo Military Police.
According to the corporation, intelligence work made it possible to identify the shipment's route and the final destination of the weapons before they arrived in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
The operation is part of Task Force Mission Redentor II, an initiative aimed at combating arms and drug trafficking and weakening the logistical and financial structure of criminal organizations. The action is also aligned with the guidelines established by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) in ADPF 635, which provides for measures to confront organized crime.
Following the arrest, the suspect, the seized weapons, and other collected materials were sent to the Federal Police Station in Sorocaba. The man was formally charged with international arms trafficking and remains in custody awaiting trial.
