Civil police officers raid storage facility to retrieve vehicle towed from Shakira concert; video

A gate was knocked down and a Seop agent was nearly run over during the operation in Andaraí.

Civil police officers raided a vehicle depot belonging to the Rio City Hall, in Andaraí, North Zone, on Sunday morning (3), to remove a car that had been towed during the operation set up for the Shakira concert in Copacabana.

According to the Municipal Secretariat of Public Order (Seop), upon leaving, the police vehicle accelerated towards the warehouse gate and knocked it down, nearly hitting an officer. A rifle was even pointed at one of the employees.

According to the police report, the vehicle, a silver Nissan Versa, had been towed for being illegally parked near the 12th Police Precinct (Copacabana).

Later, the car was identified as an unmarked Civil Police vehicle, without stickers or any visual identification, typically used in investigations.

According to information obtained by Power AgendaPolice officers from the 60th Precinct (Campos Elíseos) arrived at the scene in an official vehicle and removed the car without following administrative procedures. Municipal employees who tried to prevent the vehicle from leaving were allegedly assaulted and intimidated.

The officer shown in the images pointing a rifle at the Seop employee has been suspended from duty as a precautionary measure.

Seop: “The Municipal Secretariat of Public Order (Seop) informs that, on Sunday morning (03/05), two civil police officers invaded the public vehicle impound lot in Andaraí to forcibly recover a car that had been towed for being illegally parked in Copacabana. Employees responsible for the impound lot were assaulted after explaining the legal procedures for retrieving the vehicle. Seop expresses its solidarity with the employees and regrets the brutality of the action. The case has been registered with the Civil Police Internal Affairs Department as a disciplinary infraction.”

Civil police: "The General Inspectorate of the Civil Police (CGPOL) is investigating the conduct of the officers. The Civil Police does not condone any type of misconduct, reiterating its commitment to fighting crime in defense of society."
