The president of the Central Bank of Brazil, Gabriel Galípolo, postponed the explanations he was to give to the Senate regarding... the Banco Master case after cancelling his participation in a public hearing of the Economic Affairs Committee (CAE), scheduled for this Tuesday (5).
The session aimed to discuss topics related to monetary policy and, primarily, to clarify the Central Bank's actions in the face of the crisis involving Banco Master, an institution that became the target of a Senate investigation amid suspicions of billion-dollar fraud.
Cancellation due to indisposition
According to official information, Galípolo failed to appear after reporting illness. The new date for the hearing is still being negotiated and may take place on May 13th or 19th.
The absence comes at a time of intense pressure on the Central Bank. The presence of the head of the monetary authority was considered essential by members of the commission, given the need for clarification on how the case was being handled.
Charges from the Economic Affairs Committee
The chairman of the CAE, Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), had previously highlighted the importance of Galípolo's participation. On April 28, the senator stated that the presence of the head of the Central Bank would be "very important" for the progress of the investigations.
Members of Parliament want to understand how the Central Bank acted over the years in the face of evidence of irregularities at Banco Master. According to Renan Calheiros, the monetary authority issued 23 warnings about problems at the financial institution, without more rigorous measures being adopted until the intervention carried out in December 2025.
Tension over sending documents
Another point that has generated friction between the Senate and the Central Bank concerns the sharing of information. Members of the committee claim that documents related to the Banco Master case have not yet been forwarded by the Central Bank, which would hinder the progress of the investigations.
The expectation is that the upcoming public hearing will also serve to clarify this issue and define the level of transparency adopted by the regulatory body.
Investigation in the Senate
In February, the Economic Affairs Committee established a working group to investigate suspected fraud involving Banco Master. The group is chaired by Renan Calheiros and monitors developments in the case within the Senate.
The investigation seeks to determine both the actions of the financial institution and the role of regulatory bodies in monitoring the operations that led to the crisis.
