By a vote of nine to one, the Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) suspended on Thursday the production of any type of dossier by the Ministry of Justice on the personal and political lives of public servants. According to the majority of the Court, there was a misuse of purpose in the creation of the classified document on nearly 600 security officials identified as members of the anti-fascist movement and opponents of President Jair Bolsonaro's government. The information was allegedly shared with state and federal authorities.
"There is use of information from the State's power, from the Brazilian Intelligence System, to separate who the intelligence report believes is for or against (the government) and, from there, communicate with authorities. This is extremely dangerous and, in my view, there is a misuse of purpose. What worried me most, what seems to me to be a misuse of purpose, is the attempt by intelligence agencies to try to tabulate the political and philosophical preferences of police officers without them having committed any illicit activity. That is not the reason for the existence of intelligence agencies," said Alexandre de Moraes.
