Police sub-lieutenant killed in Covanca will be buried this Saturday after being shot.

André Luiz Cardoso Eccard, 49, a member of the Tactical Actions Group of the 18th BPM, died after being shot during a patrol in Jacarepaguá. Three other officers were injured during the attack.

The body of Military Police Sub-Lieutenant André Luiz Cardoso Eccard, 49, will be buried this Saturday (30) at the Jardim da Saudade Cemetery, in Sulacap, in the West Zone of Rio. The policeman died after being shot in the head during an operation in the Covanca community, in the Tanque neighborhood, in Jacarepaguá.

The incident occurred on Thursday (28), when teams from the 18th BPM (Jacarepaguá) were patrolling the region. During the operation, the agents were targeted by shots fired by criminals.

André Luiz was a member of the Tactical Actions Group (GAT) of the battalion and did not survive his injuries. According to information from the corporation, he arrived lifeless at the Lourenço Jorge Municipal Hospital, where the injured police officers were taken for treatment.

The attack left four police officers injured.

In addition to the sub-lieutenant, three other officers were shot during the operation. Three of the officers were hit in the head, while a fourth suffered shrapnel wounds to the back.

At least one survivor remains hospitalized in serious condition. According to information released so far, he is intubated and remains under medical care.

The incident once again drew attention to the risks faced daily by police officers working in areas marked by the presence of armed criminal groups.

Career path within the corporation

André Luiz Cardoso Eccard joined the Military Police at the age of 23, in the early 2000s. Throughout his career, he served in various roles within the force until joining the Tactical Actions Group of the 18th BPM, a unit specializing in operations to combat crime.

The police officer's death caused an uproar among fellow officers, family, and friends.

Tributes and farewell

In a statement, the Military Police expressed their sorrow at the death of the sub-lieutenant and offered their condolences to his family. The force also expressed support for the other officers injured during the incident.

The burial is scheduled for this Saturday at the Jardim da Saudade Sulacap Cemetery, where family, friends, and fellow officers are expected to pay their last respects to the policeman.

Meanwhile, investigations continue to identify those responsible for the shots fired at the team during a patrol in the Covanca community.
