The political dispute in São Paulo gained new chapters this Monday (1st). During an interview with Jovem Pan radio, the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, made harsh criticisms of the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, and mocked his management of the Brazilian economy.
When commenting on the possibility of facing Haddad again at the polls in October, Tarcísio stated that the Workers' Party candidate had become the "best Finance Minister in Paraguay's history," referring to the migration of Brazilian companies to the neighboring country.
Criticism of economic policy
According to the governor of São Paulo, the high tax burden and the current economic climate have contributed to companies leaving Brazil.
During the interview, Tarcísio linked this movement to measures implemented by the Ministry of Finance and stated that the country is experiencing a period marked by increased indebtedness, defaults, and requests for judicial reorganization.
The statement comes amid escalating political tensions between the two leading rivals vying for control of the country's largest state.
Exchange of attacks
The governor's statement came just days after Haddad criticized Tarcísio's positions related to foreign policy and public security.
Last week, the minister stated on social media that the governor would advocate for a subservient stance from Brazil towards the United States. The statement came after the US government announced measures involving Brazilian criminal organizations.
In responding to the criticism, Tarcísio denied any automatic alignment with foreign interests and stated that his focus is on combating organized crime.
"He spends the whole day talking about me."
During the interview, the governor also mocked his political opponent's behavior.
According to Tarcísio, Haddad dedicates a large part of his public statements to criticism directed at the São Paulo state government. The governor also stated that the minister should present proposals for the state instead of focusing his speeches on political attacks.
The statements reinforce the anticipation of the electoral climate and indicate that the dispute between the two should dominate a good part of the political debate in the coming months.
Scenario for the election
Analyzing the national election race, Tarcísio assessed that the political environment remains strongly polarized, which would make it difficult for alternatives outside the country's main political groups to emerge.
In the interview, he also made references to leaders such as Ronaldo Caiado and Romeu Zema, but stated that he believes the political landscape will remain concentrated among the already established poles of Brazilian politics.
Banco Master joins the conversation.
Another topic addressed by Tarcísio was the case involving Banco Master. The governor stated that the São Paulo state government has not made any investments related to the financial institution and said he is calm about the matter.
The statement comes amid ongoing investigations and questions surrounding operations linked to the bank and various public entities.
As the election period approaches, the exchange of criticisms between Tarcísio and Haddad is likely to intensify.
