Governor Wilson Witzel will announce in the coming days the suspension of classes in public and private schools starting next Monday. The decree is being drafted tonight. Public schools, where attendance is mandatory, will bring forward their vacation period.
Earlier, in an interview with Jogo do Poder, the Coordinator of the Chamber's Coronavirus Control Commission, Congressman Dr. Luizinho, stated that the measure would be inevitable, given the speed of the virus's spread in Rio.
Responsible for major immunization campaigns such as the yellow fever campaign during his time as Secretary of Health for the State of Rio, the congressman is concerned about the possibility of accelerated spread of Covid-19 in low-income areas where up to five residents share the same room in their home.
"The situation could become even more serious. We must act quickly. There's no point in taking these measures after the virus has spread exponentially, as happened in Italy," he warned.
According to him, in addition to schools and universities, public offices and private companies should operate with staff working from home, in order to prevent the spread of the virus. A member of the Health Committee, Luizinho said that the reallocation of R$ 5 billion to the Ministry of Health, in partnership with state governments and municipalities, is already secured to launch strategies to combat the virus, which is already spreading sustainably in Rio, among residents who have not traveled abroad nor had contact with people from countries where the situation has worsened significantly, such as Italy.
The interview, in which Dr. Luizinho also talks about politics, the turbulent relationship between Congress and the Government, and the municipal elections, will air at 23:15 PM on the CNT Television Network.
